Press release, 14 October 2013: Operation Noah has joined forces with 350.org and People & Planet to host the Fossil Free Tour led by acclaimed author and activist Bill McKibben.

McKibben, co-founder of the international climate campaign 350.org, leads a tour this autumn, aimed at kickstarting the fossil fuel disinvestment movement across Europe. Operation Noah and People & Planet are partners on the UK leg of the tour, which covers Edinburgh (30 October), Birmingham (31 October), and London (1 November). A Christian activist will speak at each venue. Each evening will include speakers, video and music.

Christian speakers on the tour are: London: Siobhan Grimes, Operation Noah and Climate Rush; Birmingham: Canon Giles Goddard, St John’s Church, Waterloo and Southwark Cathedral; Edinburgh: Ben Kurzman, climate activist.

Fossil Free Campaign

As with previous sold-out tours in the USA and Australia, McKibben will make the case for disinvestment from the fossil fuel industry, which is destroying our climate and posing a huge threat to humanity. The disinvestment campaign is modelled on the anti-apartheid movement of the 1980s, which helped to end the unjust system in South Africa.

The latest report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), published last month, includes for the first time a ‘carbon budget’ indicating how much fossil fuels humanity can use to avoid runaway climate change. This gives significant momentum to the growing movement to divest public institutions from the fossil fuel industry.

Numerous religious institutions in North America, Australia and New Zealand have already committed to disinvest from their fossil fuel holdings. Operation Noah launched Bright Now, their campaign for UK church disinvestment, in September this year. Since then, Quakers in Britain have announced that they are to disinvest from fossil fuel companies, which has been a huge encouragement.

Bill McKibben says: ‘It makes no sense for religious institutions to be investing in companies who are basically running Genesis backwards, decreating this beautiful world of ours. Churches, mosques, and synagogues have played a powerful role in nearly every social movement. Fossil fuel divestment will be no exception.’
