Andy Atkins, the Executive Director for Friends of the Earth, delivered the Operation Noah annual lecture 2012 on 21st November. His topic was ‘Overcoming fossil fuel addiction – the next moral revolution?’

Andy said that:

  • We have to recognise this as a moral issue and declare it as such.
  • Despite the small size of the UK economy, we have to focus on getting the UK off fossil fuels as fast as we can: this is important internationally.
  • Solutions to getting off fossil fuels are possible now.
  • The government has failed to give clear leadership towards a low carbon economy, and we have to challenge that.
  • The church has an important part to play.

He also spoke about current campaigning around the Energy Bill, and how you can get involved.

Andy has considerable experience in advocacy work. For many years he was the Policy and Campaign’s Director at Tearfund, where his role included support to enable Tearfund partners to voice their concerns over climate change and its regional impacts to a global audience. He was one of a small group who set up the ‘Make Poverty History’ campaign in 2005.
