‘You have to love what you’re seeking to protect’ – Jim Green and Chris Hull continue divestment pilgrimage

In April, divestment campaigners Jim Green and Chris Hull cycled from their homes in Norwich to three Church of England dioceses on a divestment pilgrimage. Yet Jim said he felt he could do more, and earlier this month, he cycled to four additional dioceses, all of which are still invested in fossil fuels. Next week, Jim plans to cycle to five more dioceses that have yet to divest, with Chris joining for part of the ride.

I don’t know about you, but there is so much to shout about that it can do one’s head in. I wanted something to shout for – hope rather than fear.

So when my wife Sue and I attended an Operation Noah divestment webinar last autumn and heard, for instance, about the divestment movement going from almost nothing to $39 trillion in ten years, we were encouraged.

Former Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams and 130+ clergy call on Church of England to divest from ExxonMobil

In an open letter published in Friday’s Church Times (25 February), six bishops and 130 clergy including Rt Revd Dr Rowan Williams, the former Archbishop of Canterbury, Revd Dr Sam Wells, Vicar of St Martin-in-the-Fields, and Revd Lucy Winkett, Rector of St James’s Church, Piccadilly, have called on the Church of England’s Church Commissioners to divest immediately from oil giant ExxonMobil.
